Needing to call a tow truck service is not an ideal situation to be in. It can often be daunting, especially if it’s on a busy freeway, you’re alone or it’s at night. However, before you call the tow truck service, it’s important to recognise the following safety tips to ensure you and your passengers are safe.
Check for traffic
Always check for traffic before you exit your vehicle. Treat the situation like any other and look before you try to move your vehicle or open your car door.
Push your car off road
If you’re able to move your car to the side of the road, then do so. This prevents further traffic delays and potentially further accidents. Engage your handbrake and turn your steering wheel away from the road to ensure it doesn’t roll back onto the road.
Put on your hazard lights
Make sure your hazard lights are on. Even if it is during the day, your hazard lights will indicate to oncoming traffic that your car is not moving and to slow down and approach with caution.
Place cones out
If you have hazard cones in your car, use them. Place them behind and in front of your car to ensure that traffic is aware that your car is not in action.
Step well away from your vehicle
Sit in your car with your seatbelt on if it is safe. If not, stand a safe distance from your vehicle and step behind a road barrier if there is one. Do not stand next to your car.
Call the tow truck service
Finally, call the tow truck service. Let them know exactly where you are and on what side of the road. Be sure to keep a watchful eye so you are ready when they arrive.
Breakdowns can happen even with new model cars, so ensure that your car has regular services, you have a spare tyre in good condition, and you’re always prepared in the case of a breakdown.
