It’s that time of year again. Summer! That means road trips, long country drives and beach trips in the hot sun. But before heading out on the road, it’s important to check your car for any issues to avoid a tow truck service this summer holiday.
We’ve put together a basic to-do-list to make sure your car is road trip ready.
Check fluids
Check oil, brake fluids, power steering fluid and coolant levels to ensure that you don’t damage your car’s engine. It’s also important to check there are no engine oil leaks.
Tyres
Tyres are one of the most important parts of your vehicle. The treads, tyre pressure and surface of the tyre should be inspected before you hit the road to get you and your family safely to your destination. Remember to check the spare tyre too!
Brake pads
Get your mechanic to check your brake pads for wear. This is extremely important when driving long distances as worn pads can fail or become ineffective in an emergency.
Check the toolkit
Ensure you have a jack, wheel brace, assorted spanners, spare tyre (and it’s in good condition), repair kit, spare globes and the owner’s manual. General equipment such as a shovel, torch, and extra petrol is also a good idea especially if you plan to go off road. Don’t forget your emergency equipment in the case of a break down.
Check lights, windscreen wipers and mirrors
Are your lights and indicators working? This is a ‘must check’ to avoid any potential accidents. Check the windscreen wiper blades are not worn and that mirrors and windows are clean from dust and grime.
Any road trip takes some planning, so take a few minutes to go through this checklist and get on the road knowing your car is safe.
